The Ernie and Burt dolls are recognized and they recognize each other and can interact. They can also interact with other objects placed on the mat. The two objects in the demo are a TV and a jukebox.

The Qualcomm website has the following description on their website:
"Qualcomm Inc. and Sesame Workshop, the producer behind Sesame Street, have joined forces to explore augmented reality experiences for children that encourage learning and imagination. The Making of the Muppets

This evening at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects in Hollywood, CA three of the special effects artists that created the digital effects for The Muppets shared what is took to make the new movie. The over 350 visual effects allowed the muppeteers more freedom and Muppets were able to do things that they had never done before.
The Gnomon website says that, "VFX Supervisor and Producer Janet Muswell will talk about the pre-production planning, working with puppeteers and puppets on-set, walking the line between campy and realistic and juggling the rolls of supervisor and producer. LOOK Effects’ in-house supervisor Max Ivins will discuss what they did and how (and why) they did. LOOK’s in-house producer Jenny Foster will be on-hand to explain the roll of a facility vfx producer in moving shots through the post-production pipeline."

Elmo's World Tour Begins Next Month in Australia

Elmo's World Tour will begin next month in Australia and will make nine stops through June of 2012.

Life Like Touring was given permission by Sesame Workshop to write and produce the show.  Life Like Touring is known for quality children’s entertainment and they have exclusive live licenses to more than 20 international children’s brands.
According to the press release, "In Sesame Street Presents Elmo's World Tour, the Sesame Street gang - Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Big Bird, Grover, Zoe and Cookie Monster - use the letters of the alphabet to navigate a voyage through imagination that sees them visiting China, Zambia, France, India and Australia! Elmo and his friends have fun learning how people sing and dance and say hello in different places around the world, but things don’t go to plan when Cookie Monster eats a letter of the alphabet. Hopefully Abby Cadabby can find the right spell to help. Along the way, audiences will also delight in hearing a sensational tale from The Count and will get to help back-packing rubber-duckies find a place to stay with Bert and Ernie."

Unproduced Jim Henson Screenplay Released as Graphic Novel

The graphic novel adaptation of an unproduced,
feature-length screenplay written by Jim Henson
and his frequent writing partner, Jerry Juhl.
An unproduced feature film length screenplay, "A Tale of Sand" written by Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl in 1967 was discovered in the Jim Henson Company archives.  The screenplay has recently been released as a graphic novel from Ramon Perez and the publisher Archaia Entertainment with the blessing of the Jim Henson Company.

The graphic novel's description says that is "follows scruffy everyman, Mac, who wakes up in an unfamiliar town, and is chased across the desert of the American Southwest by all manners of man and beast of unimaginable proportions."

According to a recent article from thestar.com, Perez tried to make the graphic novel accessible to both comic readers and non-comic readers.  Perez is quoted as saying, “What I tried to keep in mind all the time was that not everyone who picks this up is going to be a comic book reader. I had to make it accessible to both — entertaining to the ones who are familiar with comics and accessible for those who are unfamiliar."

Jim Henson's Tale of Sand graphic novel was released earlier this year, almost 45 years since it was written and almost 22 years since the passing of the legendary Jim Henson.

Happytime at the EFM

Happytime Murders is currently in pre-production and is slated to have Brian Henson direct with screenplay by Todd Berger (Kung Fu Panda).  The film is to be produced by Brian Henson and Lisa Henson.  The official description of the film is available at IM Global website:
"In a world where puppets co-exist with humans as second class citizens, puppet private eye and disgraced ex-cop, Phil Phillips, is hot on the trail of the serial killer who murdered his brother and is now targeting the cast members of the famous 80s television show, “The Happytime Gang.” As the killings continue, Phil’s former flame, Jenny, is next on the list. It’s up to Phil and his ex-partner, Detective Edwards, to find the culprit, but as bad blood and old resentments resurface the clues start pointing to the only viable suspect, Phil himself. Now he’s on the run with only his wits and hard headed determination, as he tries to solve, 'The Happytime Murders.'"
IM Global, a film financing, sales and distribution company, was shopping the film Happytime Murders around the European Film Market in Berlin, Germany to gain more financial backing for the project.  According to EFM website, the The European Film Market runs for nine days and is the first major film event of the year which attracts people in the film industry from across the globe.

According to the Hollywood reporter IM Global was a winner at the market.
"Happytime Murders was widely seen as the most unique and unusual project being shopped in Berlin. While no deals were announced as of late Tuesday, the film has enjoyed a good market, according to sources.  Director Brian Henson, the son of the legendary Jim Henson, came to the German capital to help push the project."

Mahna Mahna Saved The Fray

According to the new article in the The Fray may have disbanded were it not for The Muppets.
Of all the people impacted over the years by the lovable Muppets - singing frog Kermit, sassy Miss Piggy and their friends - perhaps the most unlikely is the rock band The Fray.

"Following the success of their second album, 2009's self-titled The Fray, the four members were on the verge of breaking up. Then, lead singer/pianist Isaac Slade and bassist Joe King were put together in one room in Las Vegas to record a cover of the classic Muppets song Mahna Mahna for the Muppets: The Green Album record released in August 2011.
"Something happened between the Muppets, the drunkenness and Las Vegas, and Joe and I maybe both remembered at the same time that we actually enjoy doing this," Slade said."

Muppets Merchandise from Downtown Disney

I just uploaded several pictures I took at Downtown Disney yesterday.  I tried to take pictures of all the Muppet Merchandise that I saw, but I know I missed getting a photo of a plush Animal and one other Animal t-shirt design.  The photos were added to our Facebook page.  The only thing I purchase on this trip, my first to Downtown Disney, was the Fozzie t-shirt from Disney's Design-A-Tee.

Digital Effects and The Muppets

Today the BBC technology reporter, Leo Kelion, reported on the special effects used to create or alter over 350 shots in "The Muppets."  Read his article here: How The Muppets film was boosted by GPU chip advances.

"When the puppeteers filmed the scene, Kermit was facing a blue screen, the colour chosen instead of the traditional green to accommodate the character's colour.  The 60-odd puppets facing him were added with painstaking care - and state-of-the-art graphics processors - some time later."

The article is accompained by a slideshow of before and after images with Muppets in front of blue screens: Deconstructing The Muppets film's special effects shots.

The Puppet School

Michael Earl, long time Jim Henson Muppeteer and mutiple time Emmy winner, co-founded The Puppet School with Roberto Ferreira which has four locations in Los Angeles, New York, Seattle and San Francisco.  At The Puppet School students can learn how to act, improvise, do character voices and create entertaining puppet characters that live and breathe.  Learn more about The Puppet School at www.puppetschool.com.

A recent article by Barbara Sternig highlighted The Puppet School.
"Anyone who ever watched Sesame Street or The Muppet Show will feel an instant twinge of recognition when they step into a small, crowded workshop/theater on Ventura Boulevard and spy a strangely familiar-looking lineup of puppet faces and forms.
That's because Michael Earl, co-founder and guru of the Puppet School, spent most of his early life as one of Jim Henson's master Muppeteers. And he's still at it.
The Emmy winner now teaches puppetry to beginners and advanced professionals alike, even revealing how to make your own Muppet-style puppets.
"I still do work for Muppets and Henson Productions," Earl said, "but Puppet School is my main drive. After 30 years of working with my heroes, I'm more than content to teach now, and to send my people out.... We don't know anyone in the world who's doing what we're doing."  Read more at "Puppet School Is One of a Kind."
Earl replaced the orginial Mr. Snuffle-upagus, Jerry Nelson, on Sesame Street when he was just 19.  In addition to Sesame Street other Muppet related projects Earl worked on include "The Muppet Movie," "The Muppets Take Manhattan," "John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together ," "The Jim Henson Hour," "The 30th Anniversary Muppet Special," "Sesame Street's 20th Anniversary Special" and others.

The Guardian's Jason Segel Interview

Since the announcement and all of the hype surrounding The Muppets, there have been numerous interviews with Jason Segel about his involvement in bringing the Muppets back to the big screen for the first time since 1999's The Muppets from Space.  Chrissy Iley interview with Segel was posted Saturday on The Guardian's website.
"Like many of us, Segel loved the Muppets as a child: "It's your first entrance into comedy that's kind of subversive. The Muppets lead on to Monty Python and Saturday Night Live." But it was only after the success of Forgetting Sarah Marshall that the opportunity to work with Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Gonzo presented itself."  Read the rest at www.Guardian.co.uk in Chrissy Iley's article "So Jason Segel, are you a man or Muppet?"

Katherine Heigl in negotiations for Jim Henson Co. Movie

I mentioned this article in this week's podcast.  Tough Pigs is reporting the following about the Jim Henson Company movie, "Happytime Murders."
"It’s been a long, long time since we heard any news about Happytime Murders, the Jim Henson Company’s long in-development puppet murder mystery film.  Now here’s something from Variety: Katherine Heigl  (currently on the screen in One for the Money) is in “final negotiations” to star in the project alongside a cast of Henson puppets.  Cameron Diaz’s name was mentioned in connection to Happytime some time ago, so it seems pretty likely that Heigl is up for the same role."  Read the full Tough Pigs article at Katherine Heigl Might Be in That Henson Puppet Noir Movie.

Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey Now Playing

"Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey" is currently playing in five cities around the U.S. with more dates coming soon.  The filmmakers, Constance Marks and James Miller, describe their documentary in the following way.  "Beloved by children of all ages around the world, Elmo is an international icon. Few people know his creator, Kevin Clash, who dreamed of working with his idol, master puppeteer Jim Henson. Displaying his creativity and talent at a young age, Kevin ultimately found a home on Sesame Street. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, this documentary includes rare archival footage, interviews with Frank Oz, Rosie O’Donnell, Cheryl Henson, Joan Ganz Cooney and others and offers a behind-the-scenes look at Sesame Street and the Jim Henson Workshop."

More information about the documentary, the official trailer, screening dates and more can be found at the official site BeingElmo.com.

Randall King from The Winnipeg Free Press shares his thoughts about "Being Elmo," a documentary on the life & career of Muppeteer Kevin Clash.
"educational value is alive and lively in Being Elmo, a documentary on the life and career of Muppet puppeteer Kevin Clash. I can't imagine a child who wouldn't benefit from seeing this movie.
The lessons learned here sound like a motivational speaker's playbook: Work hard. Follow your dreams. Take chances. Be yourself. Pay no attention to the naysayers. Be loyal.
In his career, Clash has demonstrated all those qualities, and it took him to Elmo, one of the most popular (not to say lucrative) Muppet characters on all of Sesame Street."  You can read more of Randall King's article Just like adorable Muppet, doc is gentle, warm, fuzzy at The Winnipeg Free Press.
If you have a change check out a current or upcoming screening of the documentary and share you thoughts with The Muppets Podcast.

What Makes The Muppets Happy?

Have you every wondered what makes the Muppets happy?  Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Animal and Walter respond with what makes them happy in a new article from Time Out.
"What makes Kermit happy…‘Being with my friends. Whether we’re making a movie, putting on a show or just hanging together trying to figure how to get Gonzo out of that huge vat of radioactive tapioca, we have fun together… and that’s the best feeling in the world.’
What makes Miss Piggy happy…‘Moi’s frog. Kermie is the be-all-and-end-all of my life… Though chocolate, jewelry, shoes and my new movie come in a very close second.’
What makes Gonzo happy…‘Bog snorkeling with my beloved Camilla the Chicken! You haven’t lived until you've snorkelled a bog with a chicken… A word to the wise: Never snorkel in radioactive tapioca. Big mistake.’"     Read the rest at Time Out
